Gynecomastia in Montreal

Gynecomastia corresponds to an increase in volume of the mammary gland in men.

Causes of Gynecomastia:

Causes of this problem are varied and include hormonal imbalance, the use of cannabis or anabolic steroids, and excess weight. However, in the vast majority of cases, no specific cause can be identified.

Clinically, gynecomastia is observed primarily during puberty and after 50 years of age, during periods of physiological hormonal fluctuations.

Gynecomastia and Puberty:

During puberty, gynecomastia is typically bilateral and diffuse, and typically regresses spontaneously within 1 or 2 years.

Treatment of Gynecomastia:

Treatment is tailored to each patient. If the breast is highly glandular, an incision under the gland is required for removal. Simultaneous liposuction may be performed.

If the breast is mainly fatty, liposuction alone may suffice. However, if there is excess skin as well, excision is necessary.

Steps Involved in Gynecomastia Surgery: A Typical Procedure Overview

There are three types of treatments:

  1. Liposuction
  2. Excision of the gland through a small incision under the nipple
  3. Excision of the gland and skin with repositioning of the nipple using long scars on each side.

Consultation is essential to plan the procedure and determine the best technique.

The Surgery

  • Local anesthesia if only liposuction is required.
  • General anesthesia for other techniques.

After the Surgery

The pain is usually mild to moderate, and physical activities can be resumed after a few weeks.
